When it comes to professional pest control, not all insecticides work the same way, even when they are both residually active. One of the biggest differences lies in whether a product is non repellent or repellent, and understanding this helps explain why certain treatments are chosen for specific pests. Here at Blaylock's Pest Solutions in Ozaukee County, we know when to use which type of product for each unique situation.
Residually active non repellent insecticides are designed so insects do not detect them. When insects walk across treated surfaces, they behave normally and unknowingly pick up the material. They then carry it back to nesting areas or shared spaces, where it spreads through contact. This approach works especially well for social insects like ants and roaches because the insects are not avoiding the treatment. Control tends to be slower at first, but it is often more thorough because it impacts the colony or source rather than just the individuals you see. A common question I get from my new clients all the time is, why not just use a repellent to keep them out in the first place? It's a 2 part answer. For one, Ants in particularly will try to go under or try some way to find a way around the repellent insecticides or try to find another way onto the structure like climbing a tree or a shrub. Additionally, by mixing up the types of ingredients used, I can avoid resistance.
Residually active repellent insecticides work differently. These products are detectable to insects and create a barrier effect. When insects encounter treated surfaces, they are repelled or killed quickly, which helps stop them from entering certain areas. This type of treatment is very effective for perimeter defense and for fast knockdown of crawling and flying insects. It is commonly used to reduce spider activity, general insect pressure, and seasonal invaders around the exterior of a home.
Neither approach is better in every situation. Non repellent treatments are often preferred when the goal is to eliminate a nesting population, while repellent treatments are ideal for creating immediate protection and keeping pests from entering. Blaylock's Pest Solutions uses both strategies at different times to achieve the best long term results.
