When I inspect a home for mouse activity, I am not just looking for droppings or noises in the walls. I am looking for how they are getting in. Mice are small, flexible, and persistent. If they find an opening about the width of a pencil, they can often squeeze through it, and once one mouse figures out a route, others tend to follow the same path.

The most common entry points are low on the structure. Gaps under exterior doors and garage service doors are big ones, especially when door sweeps are worn out or the threshold is uneven. The corners of overhead garage doors are another frequent problem area, because small daylight gaps are easy to miss. Utility penetrations are also high on the list. Think about where the AC line set, gas line, water line, or cable enters the home. If the sealant is cracked or missing, that is an invitation. Foundation cracks, gaps at the sill plate, and openings around basement windows can also allow access. Utility line entry points are included in my Proactive Pest Shield Plan, However about half the homes I service will require more specialized Mouse Proofing to keep the mice out of the home in the long term.

Mice do not always stay low, though. Attic vents, soffit gaps, and roofline transitions can become entry points when other conditions help them. That is where trees come into the picture. Keeping branches trimmed back from the house, especially near the roof, matters. Mice do not typically climb a tall tree just to reach a roof, but I have seen it happen. More often, branches act as a convenient bridge for other wildlife, and that activity can create new gaps, loosen materials, or lead to clogged gutters and moisture issues that make access easier over time.

The most effective fix is always the same. Identify the openings, mouse proof them properly, and then address any mice already inside.
